The One Tip That Will Fast Track Your Closet Clean-Out

Fall is here, and with it comes the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. If your closet has been feeling a little cramped lately, you’re not alone! Whether it’s seasonal swaps or decluttering, there’s no better time to hit reset. So many of you reach out to me, sharing your closet woes and how there isn’t nearly enough space for everything you own. I totally get it! As a woman who loves options and lives in a one-story 1960s rambler, I can tell you firsthand that the struggle is REAL!

No walk-in closets for me (which is beyond difficult since every place I lived before I got married had a walk-in closet), and the worst part about it is I have to share these tiny closets with my husband. So, needless to say, I’ve had to get creative with clothing storage and become really picky when it comes to shopping for items.

So for the girlies who have more than one of anything in their closet, this post is for you. I am sharing my number one hack that helps with purging, decluttering, and feeling more confident in my decisions regarding organizing my closet. Ready to hear what it is?

It’s the Reverse Hanger Trick! Keep reading, and I’ll tell you all about it.

What is the Reverse Hanger Trick

Peter Walsh I believe, was the first organizer to introduce this method. The "Reverse Hanger Trick" is a visual aid that removes the guesswork from decluttering. It’s not a new trick, but it is helpful. Visually being able to see what you do and don’t wear allows you to remove emotions and nostalgia from your decision-making process because it clearly shows you what you tend to gravitate toward.

How the Reverse Hanger Trick Works

Step 1: Go into your closet and arrange all the hangers the opposite way ( claw facing you is my preference).

Step 2: Start wearing your clothes as you usually would. This is the easiest part!

Step 3: When you hang your clothes back up, you'll turn the hanger to how you're accustomed to ( claw facing the inside of the closet).

Step 4: Then, the next season, in six months or a year (the timeline is up to you and the space you have to work with), take note of the hangers that are unturned or different. Those are the items you didn't use, and that’s where you can begin your decision-making. Pull those items out of the closet and begin decluttering. You can decide to sell them, regift them, or donate them.

Decluttering doesn’t have to be stressful! The ‘Hanger Trick’ takes the guesswork out of closet clean-outs and makes the whole process feel way more manageable.

This trick has helped me tremendously and has made the decluttering process more practical for me. It also speeds things up because I am not looking at the entire closet, just a handful of items. I hope this tip helps.

If you try this tip, let me know how it goes! What’s the most challenging part of your closet for you to declutter? I’d love to hear your stories—plus, share this with a friend who could use a little closet refresh too! 😊
